SOUTHERN PINES GOLF CLUB
Ranked #40 in Top 100 Golf Courses in North Carolina
Southern Pines opened as a 9 hole course in 1906. Donald Ross did extensive work and completed all 18 holes in 1914. Although it is typically not as "manicured" in and around the course as other resort courses, Southern Pines is an original Donald Ross design and certainly on our list of must play courses.
The unending appeal of this course is the succession of one fine hole after another, this being the direct result of Ross's elegant routing of the tract over the rolling, sandy hills. Walter Hagen, Patty Berg and Sam Snead have all played here and enjoyed the challenge.
Neither length nor water are factors to contend with, nor is there anything forced or contrived about the course. Every hole features at least 20 feet of elevation change so it remains interesting throughout the round. Many greens sit on the high points of a hole, allowing Ross to create deep greenside bunkers.
MID PINES GOLF CLUB

The Mid Pines golf course remains exactly as Donald Ross crafted the course in 1921, a rarity among his masterpieces. Impeccably manicured to modern standards, Mid Pines is a classic gem that has played host to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
Many people have characterized the course as “pure Donald Ross” because of how it fits the land where it was built. It’s been said that Mid Pines was never conceived as a daunting task to the finest players competing under championship conditions, but rather the course was intended as a fun course, but with sufficient challenge for members, guests and professionals.
PINE NEEDLES GOLF CLUB

Pine Needles’ award-winning golf course is the first in the nation to be awarded four U.S. Women’s Open Championships. Named the #4 golf course in the state by Golfweek, the course was designed by the legendary Donald Ross in 1927, and meticulously restored by Kyle Franz in 2017.
Donald Ross provided generous fairways and challenging green sites. There are strong elevation changes throughout the course yet is very walkable. The course has been lengthened from its original routing but still provides an intimate routing with short distances between tees and greens. Wayward shots will likely find a bed of pine needles to rest on; much like the backyards of virtually every home found on the course.
TOBACCO ROAD GOLF CLUB
Ranked #50 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World by Golf Course Architecture
Established in 1998, Tobacco Road is younger than many of the courses it has surpassed in its accumulation of accolades. Architect Mike Strantz was a student of the Golden Age Architects whose turn of the century designs set the standards while contributing to the development of the principles of golf course architecture and design.
Strantz allowed the rolling terrain to evolve into one of golf’s most uncompromising designs. Beyond the panoramic views and stunning vistas lies a course that tests all of a player’s faculties. Five sets of tees allow a player to undertake the course at a level worthy of their skill; however, one should always keep in mind – it was Strantz’s goal to test “a player’s eye, determination, and wits.”
TOT HILL FARM GOLF CLUB

Tot Hill Farm is a bold and dramatic design by the late Mike Strantz. Known for its rugged beauty, the course winds through the Uwharrie Mountains, showcasing rock outcroppings, elevation changes, and unconventional hole layouts.
Opened in 2000, it was Strantz’s final public-access design and is considered one of his most daring creations. A major restoration in 2022 brought the course back to Strantz’s original vision, with renovated greens, bunkers, and infrastructure. The historic farmhouse-turned-clubhouse adds rustic charm and a sense of place.
Tot Hill is frequently recognized as one of the most challenging and unique courses in the U.S. It offers an unforgettable experience for adventurous golfers seeking both beauty and difficulty.

THE CRADLE PAR THREE COURSE
Nearly 120 years after golf arrived at Pinehurst, The Cradle is born, a nine-hole short course that even the newest to the game can enjoy.
Designed by golf architect Gil Hanse, the Golf Channel calls The Cradle, “the most fun 10 acres in all of golf.” Mere steps from the Resort Clubhouse, it is the same area where, in 1898, Dr. Leroy Culver carved our first nine holes out of the sand. Over the next century, Pinehurst came to be referred to as the Cradle of American Golf.
PINEHURST #1
It all started here in 1898. Dr. Leroy Culver built the first nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, but it is clearly Donald Ross’s touch that you feel on Pinehurst’s first golf course.
Recalling his Scottish heritage, Ross made liberal use of bunkers, both across the fairway and around the green. Don’t let the short 6,089-yard par 70 fool you; wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. No. 1 was a great start for Pinehurst, and it’s a great start for your visit.
PINEHURST #3
This classic Donald Ross design (circa 1910) is the shortest course at Pinehurst at just 5,155 yards. But don’t let its modest distance fool you – this is a fun par 68 that was renovated this year to return many of Ross’s original design flourishes and characteristics throughout the classic layout.
Tiny elevated greens – averaging just 4,500 square feet each – demand precision, the kind of delicate approaches that will surely come in handy as you gear up for No. 2. An interesting combination of par-3s and shorter par-4s provide ample opportunities to play aggressively in search of a low score. But beware – accuracy and distance control also come into play on a number of well-conceived doglegs.
PINEHURST #5
No. 5 was designed in 1961 by Ellis Maples, a protégé of Donald Ross, and part of North Carolina’s first family of golf course design and construction.
Like Ross, Maples believed that it was the designer’s job to find the golf course that resided in the land’s structure, and his fealty to the land is evident in No. 5’s variety—holes meandering up and down, left and right, and over water. The combination of water carries, elevated greens and overall greater yardage favors longer hitters.
One of Pinehurst’s most picturesque holes, the par-3 15th, is here. Known as the Cathedral Hole, it’s fronted by a pond and encircled by a stand of ancient pines, the tops of which resemble the pipes of an organ.
