GOLF COURSES

GOLF COURSES

ROYAL TROON GOLF CLUB

Ranked #40 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World

Host of 8 British Open Championships.

In 1923, Royal Troon Golf Club hosted its first Open and finally moved out of the shadow of its famous neighbor, Prestwick. It is a traditional out and back links course. The opening few holes are relatively gentle, with a series of short par fours running along the Firth of Clyde. It’s from these early holes that you get the chance to soak up the views. On a clear day, you can see the distant Ailsa Craig in the south, and to the west, the majestic mountains on the Isle of Arran.

The course measures 7,208 yards from the championship tees and bunkers are everywhere, the majority of which are not visible from the tees. There’s plenty of deep rough and a smattering of gorse and broom to punish the wayward shot. The 6th is the longest par five in Open Championship golf and the 8th the “Postage Stamp” is the shortest par three in the Open rota at 123 yards.

TURNBERRY GOLF LINKS AILSA COURSE

Ranked #14 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World

Host of 4 British Open Championships

The Ailsa course at Turnberry is probably the most scenic Open Championship golf course. Situated on a craggy headland the course overlooks the small island of Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde, with superb views across to the Mull of Kintyre and the Isle of Arran.

Turnberry Golf Club was established in 1902 and Willie Fernie of Troon was commissioned to lay out a championship course. In 1906, the Turnberry Hotel opened and it continues to serve guests to this day, having been completely updated since it's purchase by the Trump group.

This layout changed its name to the Ailsa in 1926 and a redesign by Major Cecil Hutchison was completed in 1938, when he combined the old 6th and 7th and introduced the famous par three 15th hole.

PRESTWICK GOLF CLUB

Ranked #15 in Top 100 Golf Courses in Scotland

Host to 24 British Open Championships

Prestwick Golf Club was founded In 1851, with Old Tom Morris as “Keeper of the Green”. Nine years later in 1860, the British Open Championship was born and played for the first time at Prestwick. The Open has been held here 24 times, although the most recent championship was in 1925. St Andrews is the only venue to have hosted more Opens (26) than Prestwick.

The course is a traditional British links, with a layout of holes that snake through rugged dunes and rippled fairways. There are numerous blind holes and cavernous bunkers with wooden steps to take you down to the bottom. The greens are notoriously firm and fast, some are hidden in hollows while others are raised high. The majority are quite small and all of them have humps and hollows to negotiate.

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST ANNES GOLF CLUB

Ranked #54 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Course constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors Open Championships and the Walker Cup in 2015.

Royal Lytham & St. Annes has 174 bunkers peppering the fairways and surrounding the greens. Although the not the longest of Championship courses, it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are essential. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course as it is surrounded by suburban housing and flanked by a railway line, but it has a charm all of its own. It is a Links Course that is a long way from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on one's game.

ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB (HOYLAKE)

Ranked #15 in Top 100 Golf Courses in England

Hoylake, as it is called by those in the know, has a long and illustrious history of playing host to the Open Championship and has now staged twelve, its first in 1897. Founded in 1869, Hoylake is the second oldest seaside links course in England – only Royal North Devon is older.

George Morris, brother of Old Tom, and Robert Chambers originally laid out a 9-hole course on the site of a racecourse and for the first seven years, golfers shared the land with members of the Liverpool Hunt Club. Three extra holes were soon added and in 1871, the course was extended to 18 holes. In 1872, the club received royal patronage from Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

Without doubt, Royal Liverpool is a tough links. Only six holes are in the dunes – otherwise there is little protection from the ever-changing wind. There is nothing artificial about the course. It represents a traditional, genuine test of golf and after 39 years away, The Open Championship returned to Hoylake in 2006, with Tiger Woods the winner.

ROYAL BIRKDALE GOLF CLUB

Ranked #38 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World

Designed by George Lowe, Royal Birkdale as we now know it was opened in 1897. In the 1930s, the course was remodelled and upgraded to championship standards by F.G. Hawtree and J.H. Taylor.

The club was simply known as Birkdale until 1951 when King George VI bestowed the royal charter on the club. Royal Birkdale Golf Club has hosted all the important events—the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, Ladies British Open Championship. The British Open Championship has been hosted at Birkdale no fewer than nine times (most recently in 2008).

It truly is a famous links and widely recognized for its fairness. If you hit the fairways, rarely will the ball be thrown off course. The fairways are laid out in the flat-bottomed valleys between the towering dunes. These dunes, in turn, provide superb viewing platforms for spectators.
